Subject: Till we meet again …
Dear Colleagues,
“There is a tide in the affairs of men, Which taken at the flood, leads one to fortune.
Omitted, all the voyage of their life is bound in shallows and in miseries.
On such a full sea are we now afloat.
And we must take the current when it serves, or lose our ventures.”

If you read this blog : “Wanted: Entrepreneurs Who Can Ignite 550 Million Young Indian Minds” Posted by Navi Radjou on November 19, 2008 at http://discussionleader.hbsp.com/radjou/index.php you will appreaciate what I am trying to do.
Setting the context:
I participated in summer school in the University from Vienna (Austria), which opened my mind to tremendous potential we have in Knowledge Management.
Flight was from Delhi, so I had to take a train back to Mumbai. On railway station I read in the newspaper that around 2500 students had committed suicide that year, after failing in 10th and 12th standard examinations, primarily in English and Mathematics. Seeing an opportunity to bring about a difference, I chose to stay in rural areas in Bhopal for one year, training around 1000 students in KM Tools and tackling their learning disabilities. I gave up my plan to go to USA for my PhD.
My parents got me married and then I had to look for a paying job. I decided to spend 4 years in the corporate sector and pick up the best practices of how corporate are run and come back to social sector after some time.
Six months at Deloitte has taught me more than 16 years of formal school education.
Vision :
My logic is if we can use Total quality management to reduce waste, become lean and add value to a process and if we can use Knowledge Management to connect experts and tap tacit knowledge for the corporate sector and thereby increase bottom line, we can also use these concepts in Schools, colleges, universities, Municipal corporations to become lean and add value. The entire “process excellence” framework for our country.
With this in mind, I have started a Nonprofit “Nachiket Foundation” which will turn this vision into a reality. To take the tools of Total quality management and Knowledge Management to all corners of the world and add value.
Responsibilities :
I know this is a risk. Economy is down, jobs are few, markets have slowed down and some countries are facing recession. So after I put in my papers all well wishers said ‘stick to your job’ especially if you have a satisfying job, a good wife and a kid (6 months old) one has to have responsibility for them.
However at one point of time, you feel you are responsible not just for your family, but for greater scheme of things…the time is right and the time is now….
After all you don’t judge unconventional people with conventional standards….
Deliverables :
So here is what I set to do,
- Use quality circles to reduce carbon footprint issues in this country
- Use 5S methodology to increase awareness of hygiene issues
- Use ISO 9001:2000 standard to standardize process improvements in schools and colleges all over the country.
- Use Six sigma in schools, colleges, universities, hospitals, railways, transport to become lean
- Use Kaizen to inculcate the mindset of continuous improvement,
- Use Knowledge Management to drive innovation and best practices in all corners of this country.
Initially Nachiket Foundation will do this for India and neigbouring countries. Then “International society for Nachiket Consciousness” will take this up globally.
Call for action :
Swami Vivekananda, said “Give me 10 or 12 boys with the faith of Nachiket and I will turn the thougths and pursuits of this country in a new channel”….time to do that is NOW…..
nachiketacharya@yahoo.com and will soon write blogs to share my experiences at www.nachiket.org (currently under construction)
My best wishes are with each one of you…may you progress and find your purpose in life….Till we meet again….
